Ojani “OJ” H
This month’s spotlight is one of our amazing 9-1-1 Call Takers – OJ!
He has been with NTECC for about a year and a half, having previously worked at the Denton County Jail. In his time with NTECC, he has helped a caller to successfully deliver a baby and he also received an award for his assistance in talking down a suicidal caller.
According to him, the most challenging part of this job is “constantly switching gears from relaxed to engaged; you have to deal with constant calls one second, and then other times no calls for minutes on end.” Meanwhile, his favorite part of the job is “when I speak with coworkers and we can joke around and talk about work or things in our personal life.”
The three words/phrases he uses to describe NTECC are “busy, hectic, and peaceful.” According to him, a true leader is “helping people and being patient with them, even when it’s frustrating.”
For prospective candidates, he says, “it’s going to be easy some days, and hard and uncomfortable other days. Don’t dwell on the hard days, because they won’t last forever.” He has no set plan for the next 10 years because he is “just taking it day by day for now.”
